Complutum

(Madrid)

A little more than 20 km from Madrid, in the magnificent meadows of the Henares River, is the Roman city of Complutum. It began in the 1st century BC, and it was in the time of the Emperor Augustus when an urban project was built following the profound knowledge that the Greeks and Romans had of town planning: straight streets on ordered grids, porticoes, forums, public baths, private houses of refined taste and cosmopolitan citizens. Today, a visit to the archaeological park allows you to walk through many of these spaces and admire their buildings, mosaics and wall paintings. Complutum was the origin of today’s Alcalá de Henares.
