The Plaza de San Diego in Alcalá de Henares was created in the 16th century with the construction of the Plateresque style façade of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso. The university façade now presides over the wide square with landscaped areas, a true ideological and artistic summary of the academic postulates that gave rise to the University. To its left is the Colegio de San Pedro y San Pablo, also a Cisneros foundation, and to its right is the university chapel of San Ildefonso, where the tomb of Cardinal Cisneros is located. The eastern side of the square is occupied by the gigantic volume known as the Cuartel de San Diego, built in the 19th century on the site of the Franciscan monastery of Santa María de Jesús (15th century).
