The Island of the Lazareto of Menorca is a remarkable historic and architectural complex originally built for the protection of public health, and set in the port of Mahón. The complex was built to house the crews of vessels arriving from the East and from North Africa for a period of quarantine, and thus to prevent the constant epidemics that occurred throughout the nineteenth century.
