Hermitage of Santa María de Melque

(Toledo)

The site of Santa Maria de Melque includes the church, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with category of monument and the environment known as “Conjunto de Melque”, also declared as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with a Historic Site category. The enclave is located 5 kms. to the northeast of the Toledo municipality of San Martin de Montalbán, on a rectangular plot of 25 hectares. It is the oldest monastic group preserved in the Iberian Peninsula, built around an old Roman villa; as remarkable parts we find a walled enclosure, the dwellings occupied by the monks, five dams, some of them of Roman origin as the so-called “north-western” and the church of the same name.
