Located between the provinces of Cuenca and Guadalajara, the reservoir is encased in a deep gully, point of confluence of the Guadiela and Tajo rivers, between the wooded mountains that form the Altomira mountain range. It has a maximum capacity of 31 hm³. It was inaugurated in 1910 as a hydroelectric power plant together with the town of Salto de Bolarque.
