Braña de la Pornacal

(Asturias)

The ‘braña de La Pornacal’ is the largest and best conserved ‘braña’ (place where the cattle use to graze in summer) in Somiedo, where the ancient traditions of the ‘vaqueiros de alzada’ survive in a setting of incomparable beauty. Formed by 32 teitos or cabins, it is located at 1170 m altitude. The teitos have a rectangular stone block added, covered by a gabled roof with curved tiles and exposed stone walls. As it is characteristic, the ‘teito’ has its roof covered with dry branches of brooms; its interior is divided between the cabin for people and animals, in a small ‘llar’ or home for people and a barn and tented for animals.
