Madrid, November 26, 2025 – The delegation of Spain Film Commission participated this week in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI Goa 2025) and Waves Film Bazaar, reinforcing institutional and audiovisual cooperation between Spain and India at a decisive moment for bilateral relations between the two countries.
Representing the Spanish audiovisual sector, Juan Manuel Guimeránspresident of the Spain Film Commission, presented the festival director with the award, Mr. Shekhar Kapur of a letter signed by Ignasi Camós In this document, the Director General of the ICAA (Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales), in which Spain officially expresses its interest in becoming a “Focus Country” in 2026. An unprecedented milestone that would take place within the framework of the Dual Year Spain-India 2026.. Although Spain has been forging closer ties with the Indian audiovisual industry for more than a decade, it has never been a guest country at this festival, one of the most important in Asia.
On the other hand, within the framework of the festival, specifically in Waves Film Bazaar, meetings were held to work on the joint development of a Spain-India 2026 action plan, which will include new audiovisual co-productions, content exchange and participation in key markets, academic and professional exchange programs, as well as cooperation between festivals and events in both countries.
This boost is part of the bilateral audiovisual co-production agreement signed in 2012, which will soon be updated to adapt to the current technological and productive context. The dynamism of the sector is generating new opportunities for collaboration, already reflected in outstanding co-productions between both countries, such as the first Spain-India co-production, “Mudras”, produced by Anna Saura and Bobby Bedi, consolidating the path for future joint projects.
Strategic partnership with Madhya Pradesh
Spain Film Commission has also initiated new approaches with the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradeshrecognized for its growing commitment to the audiovisual industry and tourism, which is linked to the methodology and results of the Experiences Program, the screen tourism project developed by the Spain Film Commission to make Spain a benchmark country in the sector.
The first public milestone of this alliance will be a prominent presence of Madhya Pradesh and the Indian audiovisual industry in FITUR Screen 2026at the most important tourism fair in Ibero-America, where Spain Film Commission has played a key role for the past seven years.
Institutional strengthening and renewal of alliances
Previously, a meeting was held in Mumbai with the Producers Guild of India, where the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Spain Film Commission, Casa de la Indiarepresented by its director, Guillermo Rodriguezand the Producers Guild of Indiaone of the leading organizations in the Indian audiovisual sector, which brings together film, television and digital content producers.
In parallel, Andalucía Film Commissionrepresented by its director Piluca Queroldeveloped its own agenda aimed at strengthening institutional relations and promoting the Andalusian territory to the Indian industry.
India continues to consolidate its position as one of the most dynamic audiovisual production centers in the world, with more than 2,000 annual shootings and a digital market that already ranks second globally, with a value of more than 25 billion dollars. These data were highlighted by Padma Angmo, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting – Government of India, during her speech at Iberseries & Platinum Industry 2025 last October in Madrid.
Therefore, the upcoming Spain-India Dual Year will be a key opportunity to boost the audiovisual industry between both countries, in the framework of which a wide participation of the Spanish audiovisual industry in international platforms and events such as IFFI Goa and Waves Film Bazaar India, which will act as strategic accelerators for the visibility of the Spanish sector in Asia, is foreseen.
