Fuensanta Reservoir

The historical background of the Fuensanta dam dates back to the end of the 19th century. During the 1870s, a series of important events occurred, among which the one that occurred on October 15, 1879, classified as highly catastrophic, stood out. As a result of these events, in March 1885 the Congress against floods in the Levante Region was held in Murcia, from which arose the development of a broad plan entitled Project of defense works against floods in the valley of the Segura river, dated 1886. This plan included the Puente de los Vizcaínos reservoir, located in the upper basin of the Segura, which would store about 25 hm³ with a dam about 40 m high. On April 25, 1902, the National Plan for Hydraulic Works was approved, the validity of which would last until 1926, the year in which the Segura Hydrographic Union Confederation was created.
