Undoubtedly, one of the most notable elements of the Town Hall building is the Salón Noble, or Plenary Hall, so called because it is where these municipal sessions are held, as well as various ceremonial or solemn acts. But it is perhaps less well known that this hall occupies the upper part of what used to be the church of the convent-college of Agonizantes, a former university college that had been left empty after the closure of the University in 1836 and which, after various vicissitudes, was acquired by the Town Hall in 1855 with the aim of installing its headquarters there. The building, an old mansion built in the mid-17th century, was completely renovated and reopened in 1870.
