The Basilica of Santa Teresa de Jesus is a religious temple of the ducal town of Alba de Tormes, (Salamanca). Unfinished temple of neo-Gothic style. It was conceived by Enrique María Repullés y Vargas to house the remains of Saint Teresa of Jesus and welcome the thousands of pilgrims who come to visit them. The works officially began on May 1, 1898. The project was promoted by Bishop Tomás Cámara, who managed to mobilize the society of Salamanca with a pastoral letter entitled “Saint Teresa asks us for a basilica”. Despite the fact that at the time of the works there was a financing that covered practically the budget of the temple, the great difficulties of the land, located next to the River Tormes, multiplied the costs of foundations, limiting the future development of the work. During the Second Republic, in 1933, the works are permanently interrupted; a grandiose project by the architect Repullés, of neo-Gothic design with more than 3100 m² of extension, ships of eleven meters high with many side chapels.
