Julióbriga (in Latin Iuliobriga, literally Fortified City of Julio, in memory of Augusto’s adoptive father: Cayo Julio César) was the most important Roman city of the 9 founded in Cantabria, it has traditionally been identified with the remains located on a hill of 917 meters in the town of Retortillo, in the interior of Cantabria and in the area of ​​transition between the Coast and the Meseta; had access to the sea by the so-called Port of Victory (Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium), which probably corresponds to the current Santander and which was founded in 26 a. C., at the end of the Cantabrian wars.
