Las Médulas offers a spectacular landscape, resulted from the gold mining by the Romans. It is, without doubt, the largest gold mine excavated by the Romans in all of their Empire. Located in Leon (Castile and Leon), the 300 million cubic metres of earth extracted for gold panning have become, with the passage of time and erosion, one of Spain’s most beautiful and valuable historical and archaeological sites. In addition, since December 1997, it is a World Heritage Site.
