Santillana del Mar

(Cantabria)

It is popularly known by the nickname the town of three lies, since it is neither holy (San), nor flat (llana), nor has the sea (mar) as implied by its name in Spanish. In the village of Santillana del Mar (Cantabria) we find the church of Santa Juliana, of Romanesque style, erected mostly in the mid-12th century, and built with sandstone ashlars. The village is near the Altamira Caves, currently closed to the public. Near the cave is the Altamira Museum, which contains an exact replica and a permanent exhibition on Prehistorical Cantabria. The building was designed by the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg.
