Its surface area, which covers more than 120 hectares, makes it the largest cemetery in Madrid and one of the largest in Western Europe. The current cemetery may be divided into three parts: the Civil Cemetery, the Hebrew Cemetery and the old Cemetery of Our Lady of the Almudena which is where the section known as the \u201cEpidemics Cemetery\u201d is to be found. It houses the remains of prominent political figures, intellectuals and artists. The entrance portico is in the Modernist style with Neo-Mud\u00e9jar influences, with brick, granite and limestone being used for the columns.
